Building Custom Harm Reduction Kits for Your Program

Syringe service programs, health departments, and community organizations do some of the most important public health work there is, often on tight budgets and with small teams. Pre-assembled custom kits save staff time at the distribution table, keep supplies consistent, and make it easier to track what's going out the door. Here's how to think about building kits that work for your program.

Start with your program's needs

Before choosing components, map out who you serve and how you distribute:

  • What does a typical participant need per visit or per week?
  • Do you distribute at a fixed site, through outreach, or by mail?
  • What are your state and local regulations around syringe distribution?
  • What does your funding allow per kit?

Common kit components

  • Sterile syringes: Easy Touch syringes are available in a range of gauges, needle lengths, and volumes, by the box or case.
  • Sterile cookers: Apothicom single-use sterile cookers like the 5ml Bulkcooker and Stericup help reduce the risk of sharing equipment.
  • Filters: Sterifilt+ Plus, Sterifilt FAST, and prebagged cotton pellets.
  • Alcohol prep pads, tourniquets, and sterile water.
  • Wound care: dressings, gauze, and ointments, or a complete Wound Care Kit.
  • Overdose response and testing: naloxone, fentanyl and xylazine test strips.
  • Safe disposal: personal sharps containers.
  • Program information: cards with your hours, services, and referral resources.

Why custom kitting?

  • Consistency: every participant gets the same complete set of supplies.
  • Staff time: less time counting and bagging, more time with participants.
  • Better tracking: easier inventory and grant reporting when you count kits instead of loose items.
  • Your branding: kits can be packaged to reflect your program.
